Bikram Yoga

Are you Considering Bikram Yoga Postures or Poses for your Back Pain? You May Want to Think Twice Before Doing Hot Yoga, if you Have a Back Injury, Why?

Bikram yoga postures, or Hot Yoga, as it is popularly known today, is becoming one of the hottest yoga trends in the health and back care community. Many individuals with back pain are considering Bikram yoga poses for back pain. For me, Hot yoga and Back pain can be a disaster, especially if you have acute back problem or have just suffered a recent back injury. In this case, heat, strenuous yoga, and a back injury can be the same as putting fuel on a raging fire. What are the benefits of bikram yoga and practicing in a heated room, I don’t know?

Bikram Yoga Poses or Hot Yoga, was developed in the early 1970′s by Bikram Choudhury who set a series of 26 yoga positions to be practiced in a 1 1/2 hour pre-set class in a room heated to 105 degrees F.

As a back pain guru, I want my clients with a back injury or back pain to be really careful about adding the practice of Bikram yoga postures to heal their back problems. I have had the experience of putting myself through a class of bikram yoga positions, and one session was enough. The suffocating, heated class environment, with the regimented 14 yoga postures repeated twice in a 90 minute class was very generic and non-specific for my personal preference.

So would I want you to do Bikram Yoga Poses in a heated room or Hot yoga for your acute back pain. NO, please! This could be a recipe for disaster. Although the benefits of Bikram Yoga are that you will feel great because of sweating alot and your muscles will overstretch in the heat and you will feel like you have really made progress. Beaware that you might spiral down a day or 2 later as everything will start contracting. Yes Ouch! this can really hurt.
