Kegel Exercises

If Done Correctly, Kegel Exercises can help Reduce Back Problems, Stress Incontinence and Sexual Function.

Kegel exercises are pelvic floor exercises and should not be confused with abdominal exercise. When done correctly, pelvic exercises can often improve or even stop urinary incontinence. The exercises may also improve sexual performance in both men and women.

I am always asked about pelvic exercises which is why I decided to put together a section for you that would be very practical. These exercises (sometimes called Kegels), are named after Dr. Arnold Kegel who developed them in 1948. These exercises are conscious contractions of the pelvic muscles to strengthen them after childbirth, aging, or any kind of lower pelvic region surgery that has stretched and weakened the pelvic muscle.

Kegels are very simple to do, yet very powerful. It is simple self-care that really works. Up to 85% of the incontinent population can benefit from these pelvic exercises. Here are some types of incontinence that regular pelvic floor exercises may improve:

1. Stress incontinence during exercise, laughing, coughing or sneezing
2. Post-childbirth incontinence
3. The period following Prostate Surgery or after a Hysterectomy
4. The period after weight gain
5. Aging

Other conditions this exercise helps improve include:

1. Pelvic organ prolapse
2. Fecal incontinence
3. Decreased sexual response in men and women

Regular exercises can also help prevent low back problems from occurring at all. Watch this quick video tutorial to help build your pelvic muscle using the pelvic floor exercises.
