Today Yoga Exercises are the “In Thing”. Did you Know Which Yoga Poses Really Help Reduce Back Pain?
Are you considering Yoga Exercises for you back pain? Not sure which yoga poses may help or harm you? Let me help you take the mystery away. Pilates and Yoga studios are cropping up in every neighborhood. Knowing which type to do, or for that matter, finding safe postures for your body type and condition of your back can become a huge challenge. I want to encourage you to add at least one yoga pose to your healthy back program, but before I do that, I must assist you in finding specific yoga exercises that will be “good” for you!
The tradition began in my ancestral lineage thousands of years ago in India. Yoga poses mimicking animal postures were used to keep the spine supple, allow the breath to flow freely, and relax the mind. “Yogis”, lifelong practioners, (usually men) would spend most of their lives’ exploring the limits of the mind and body. The knowledge they gained through these extreme experiences was then passed along in sacred texts or “sutras” from generation to generation.
Today, most practitioners and teachers in the west are women. They have incorporated and modified the teachings expressed in the sutras and have designed their own style of yoga exercises incorporating the basic yoga poses explored and expressed by the ancient yogis. Even common stretches used in fitness gyms are variations and modifications of classic postures. Let me remind you it is not only for stretching, there is also a very powerful body strengthening and mind relaxation component to a yoga pose which is extremely helpful in reducing back pain.
Have you noticed that men often shy away from stretching. They will spend most of their time strengthen muscle groups and avoid classes at any cost. Why you may ask? In males, a typical muscle fiber does not stretch as easily as their female counterpart, requiring way more effort to achieve a similar result in body flexibility.
Now men, we all know that the best things in life require a lot of patience and practice. Moreover, stretching muscle groups does not give that “bulky macho” look that pumping iron does. One of my goals is to encourage my male readers to come along for the ride with me as I take you on a slow and steady journey. The specific yoga poses that I will explore in the next sections are easy to do, they will make you stronger, flexible, focused, help reduce your back pain and you won’t look like a contortionist.
Let the race to flexibility begin now with yoga exercises; a supple body will lead to a flexible, pain-free mind.
